Eva Said

NMDC Founder and Executive Director

After years as a UK-educated nurse working in Britain, Eva Said moved with her husband to his ancestral home in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to raise their family. After teaching in a local college of nursing, recognized that the difference between life and death for mothers and babies often comes down to the education of their nurses. During this time, she volunteered with LDS Charities teaching nurses and midwives modern techniques. Recognizing that the need for continuing education for lay nurse midwives would improve maternal and infant outcomes, she developed the concept for a continuing education center. Partnering with LDS Charities, she founded the Nursing and Midwifery Development Centre (NMDC). Today, as Executive Director, Eva develops and teaches curriculum for staff that meets international standards and addresses the need for continuing education for nurses and midwives.

Barien Sulaiman Barzani

NMDC Manager

Barien Sulaiman Barzani began her journey at the NMDC as one of Eva’s most dedicated students, quickly distinguishing herself through her clinical skill and commitment to her community. Now serving as the NMDC Manager and Eva’s second-in-command, she plays a vital role in bringing international training standards to the local Kurdish context. As a Kurdish-American nurse who rose from student to leader, Barien embodies the NMDC’s mission, working daily to ensure her colleagues have the professional tools and support they need to provide world-class training.
